David Allan
Care Worker
What attracted you to the Care Worker role at Housing 21?
I joined Housing 21 over four years ago. I had previously held a few different roles not really knowing what it was I wanted to do. First and foremost for me was having a job with that feel-good factor. Knowing I’m giving back to the community and helping others leaves a smile on my face every day. It helps I’ve got a short commute – it’s really convenient and means I can cover shifts last minute, which isn’t a chore when you genuinely enjoy spending time with the residents.
What’s the best part of your job?
I love that every day is different and each day is filled with a variety of tasks from feeding, to personal care, companionship and entertainment - I’m often told I don’t stop talking so this one comes naturally. If one of the residents has had a bad day I always say don’t worry, tomorrow is a new day and it’s something that I remind myself of too if I’ve had a harder day than usual.
The team here are also great - they listen to your ideas and encourage you to plan activities. I organised a Halloween party for residents and a trip to Beamish - both of which were a success and hugely rewarding. Even the little things like putting music on for the residents and making them a cup of tea can really lift their mood.
What would you say to someone thinking about a Care Worker role at Housing 21?
I would recommend this job to anyone who wants a variety of tasks each day and can put others’ needs first. There are courts all over the country so take a look and find out what’s near to you, visit a court and experience what it’s all about.
