Housing 21’s Extra Care scheme Handyside Court in Derby, has been recognised by Derby City Council with the prestigious Community Respect Award.

The accolade celebrates the scheme’s commitment to fostering a welcoming, inclusive, and respectful community for its residents and the wider local area.

In addition to this achievement, Handyside Court has been nominated for three other prominent awards including The Dignity Award from the Derby Safeguarding Board, recognising its partnership with Clear Minds, a local mental health charity that runs a community café and workshops from Handyside Court.

The Co-Production Award at the Great British Care Awards, for collaborative efforts with Clear Minds in supporting mental health awareness and community engagement.

Finally, the Girl Power Award at the Women in Social Care Awards, celebrating the exceptional contributions of the predominantly female team. Despite forming only in February, the team has already enriched residents' lives through activities such as bingo, craft and quiz clubs, outings to local pubs, and themed events like Black History Day and Mental Health Awareness sessions.

Scheme Manager Ruth Gipson said: "We’re thrilled to have been recognised both locally and nationally. This recognition reflects the dedication of our team and our strong partnerships with the community.

“At Handyside Court, we strive to create a vibrant and supportive environment for our residents, and these achievements are a testament to that effort."

The Extra Care scheme is situated in a quiet cul-de-sac in the centre of a well-established housing estate in Alvaston, Derby. Handyside Court has a communal lounge with a flat screen television, activity room, kitchen, communal laundry, conservatory, guest room and private car park; it also has its own salon.
