Residents of Knaves Court, an Extra Care scheme for older people in Brownhills, have begun another year of learning new skills, building friendships and boosting their wellbeing through a partnership with Walsall College.
As part of the programme, residents officially enrol with the college and take part in craft and wellbeing classes delivered on-site at Knaves Court by a visiting teacher. Over the past three years, students have worked on a range of creative projects, including embroidered aprons, jewellery, pottery and decorated bird boxes.
Maggie Lampitt, Resident Experience Coordinator at Knaves Court, said: “I’m so proud of what our residents have achieved through these classes. Often, they’ll say they can’t do something, but by the end of the session they’ve done it and are proud to show their work to family and friends. The confidence they gain is huge and it’s amazing to see them supporting each other while they’re working.”
The partnership with Walsall College was established after Maggie explored ways to bring learning opportunities directly to Knaves Court, which is owned and managed by Housing 21. Since then, around 20 residents have enrolled with the college each academic year.
Margaret, a resident at Knaves Court, said: “The college class has a beautiful, friendly atmosphere and it’s lovely to have something that you’ve made yourself. My granddaughter likes everything I’ve made and has even claimed some of them.”
Over the summer, the achievements of last year’s students were recognised at an end-of-term summer prom, where participants received certificates and special achievement awards in front of fellow residents, family and friends.
Lynne Deakin, a teacher at Walsall College, said: “The partnership between Housing 21 and Walsall College has been a remarkable journey. It has created a vibrant space where education meets community, allowing residents to acquire valuable skills while fostering meaningful connections.
“It's a true testament to the power of collaboration, demonstrating how education can encourage community spirit and personal growth.”
Classes have now resumed for this academic year, once again giving residents the opportunity to enrol with the college and enjoy another year of learning, creativity and community.
