A new chapter for independent living in Faringdon was celebrated with the official grand opening of Fern Meadows, Housing 21’s new Extra Care scheme.

Residents were joined by local partners, stakeholders and members of the public to mark the milestone, as the scheme, already home to a growing community, was formally opened. The event featured a ribbon-cutting ceremony, speeches, refreshments, live entertainment, and a tour of the facilities which showed the vibrant and inclusive community which Fern Meadows has quickly become.

The £15.5 million development brings 60 one- and two-bedroom apartments to the area, available for rent or shared ownership for people aged over 55. As Housing 21’s fifth Extra Care scheme in Oxfordshire, Fern Meadows plays an important role in meeting increasing local demand for high-quality, accessible housing that enables people to maintain their independence while having care and support available when needed.

The all-electric, low-carbon scheme includes a range of communal facilities such as a residents’ lounge, café/bistro, activity room, hair salon and landscaped gardens. These shared spaces are designed not only for residents, but also to encourage engagement with the wider local community.

Darren Herbert, Deputy Head of Extra Care South at Housing 21, said:

“Fern Meadows represents a significant investment in the future of housing for older people in Faringdon. The official opening is a proud moment, celebrating not only the building itself but the thriving community that has already formed here.

“Extra Care offers a positive alternative for those who want to remain independent while having access to care and support tailored to their individual needs. It is encouraging to see residents settling in and making Fern Meadows their home.”

The scheme’s location close to local amenities, including shops, healthcare services and leisure facilities, further strengthens its role within the town, helping residents remain active and connected.

Karen Fuller, Director of Adult Social Care at Oxfordshire County Council, said:

“We are delighted to support the opening of Fern Meadows, which is a fantastic example of the Oxfordshire Way in action – working in partnership to help people live well and independently for longer, close to their communities.

“Extra Care housing gives people the privacy and independence of their own home, with the reassurance that care and support are available day and night when needed.

“It’s wonderful to see a welcoming and connected community already taking shape in Faringdon.”

Housing 21 continues to expand its Extra Care provision across the UK, responding to the evolving needs of an ageing population and working in partnership with local communities to deliver long-term social value.
