Celebrations were underway at Retirement Living schemes across the South West as residents came together to celebrate the winners of Housing 21’s annual In Bloom gardening competition. The ceremonies, held at Eric Long Court, Mountbatten Court, and Leonard Houlden Court, recognised residents’ creativity when transforming their outdoor spaces into vibrant community gardens.
The competition has become a highlight of the year for many as residents compete with the chance to win trophies, certificates and recognition for their garden displays in a formal ceremony, along with music and food to mark the occasion.
Antony Walker, Head of Retirement Living for the South West, commented on the success of the events: “In Bloom has become a key part of the calendar in the South West and residents really stepped it up this year! We’ve seen a range of garden designs, from those of such high quality that I think they could compete with the RHS!
“I’ve loved how it brought our communities together, and the words of one resident have stuck with me – that they ‘have tried to ensure that everyone on court, wherever their apartment is, has something to see to brighten their day’.”
Housing 21’s own version of the RHS’s In Bloom initiative celebrates resident’s creativity, while supporting their wellbeing by encouraging communities to work together to enhance their shared spaces. It has become a highlight of the year for many, with friendly competition motivating residents to collaborate and take pride in their environment.
Sponsored by Nazeing Heating, the three events brought together residents from Housing 21’s Retirement Living schemes across the region. The company funded food for attendees, and supported with transport to help residents from different schemes meet and celebrate together.
Antony Walker, said: “We’re immensely grateful for the support of Nazeing Heating who helped us run three wonderful awards ceremonies this year, bringing residents together from a dozen courts spread across the South West.”
A spokesperson for Nazeing Heating said: “We’ve been delighted to be part of the In Bloom celebrations over the past couple of years. The dedication and commitment of the residents is amazing to see. The creation of flower displays ranging from hanging baskets and flower beds, to eco gardens and even mermaids swimming under boats is incredible.”
Each event ended with an awards ceremony recognising residents’ achievements, before a quiz provided the perfect opportunity for residents to unwind and enjoy time together.
