Housing 21, a leading not-for-profit provider of safe, quality and affordable properties for older people, is delighted to unveil Matilda Court as the official name for its newest Retirement Living scheme in Crewe.

Matilda Court will be an all-electric, low carbon scheme, providing independent living for residents. This will be a great choice for people looking to downsize and enjoy living in a beautiful new home with communal facilities available.

The name Matilda Court takes inspiration from Roald Dahl’s 1988 novel Matilda, in which a memorable limerick referencing the town of Crewe is read aloud from a book of humorous verse. In the story, Matilda recites the following limerick: An epicure, dining at Crewe, found quite a large mouse in his stew. Cried the waiter, "Don't shout, and wave it about, or the rest will be wanting one, too!"

This playful verse places Crewe directly within the imaginative world of a beloved children’s classic. The reference highlights Crewe’s presence in British literary humour and adds an element of storytelling to the scheme’s identity.

Residents at Matilda Court will enjoy convenient access to local amenities and a range of on‑site communal facilities, including a welcoming residents’ lounge, landscaped gardens, and a buggy store. A dedicated Local Housing Manager will also be on-site to support residents day-to-day.

The development will provide affordable, independent living for people aged 55 and over, offering a mix of one- and two-bedroom apartments available for social rent.

Jacqueline Poole, Operations Manager at Housing 21, said: “We are delighted to name our new scheme in Crewe Matilda Court. The name offers a meaningful blend of local heritage and cultural charm, while the development itself will provide high‑quality, affordable homes for older people in a well‑connected, vibrant town.”

All properties at Matilda Court are available for social rent. Fifty percent of the apartments will be allocated to applicants on Cheshire East Council’s housing register, known as Cheshire Homechoice.

These properties will be advertised on the Cheshire Homechoice website, where eligible applicants can place bids. To register, please visit www.cheshirehomechoice.org.uk.
