Residents at almost 100 of Housing 21’s Extra Care and Retirement Living schemes are reconnecting with nature and each other through its How Does Your Garden Grow initiative - a community-focused project that’s bringing people together, promoting wellbeing and transforming shared outdoor spaces.

Launched in partnership with environmental charity Groundwork and its Home Grown campaign, the project has seen Housing 21 fund gardening starter packs for residents, filled with everything needed to get growing – from gloves and trowels to seed trays and a vibrant selection of flowers, herbs and vegetables.
Corrinne Askaroff, Tenancy Sustainment and Arrears Advisor at Housing 21 said: “How Does Your Garden Grow has become so much more than just a gardening initiative – it’s a meaningful way for residents to reconnect with their surroundings, rediscover hobbies, and most importantly, with each other. For many, it’s reignited a sense of purpose and pride.”
“We’ve seen residents who don’t usually take part in activities come out into the garden, get their hands dirty, and form new friendships. It’s had a real impact on wellbeing, confidence, and community spirit.”
This initiative is a shining example of social value in action – combining the strengths of a not-for-profit housing provider with a charitable environmental organisation to deliver meaningful, lasting impact. By working together, Housing 21 and Groundwork have created an inclusive, resident-led project that not only enhances wellbeing and outdoor spaces, but also builds stronger communities and empowers individuals to take pride in where they live.
A key success of the project has been reaching those who might not otherwise engage. A local Housing Manager highlighted one case where a resident who rarely left their flat became a driving force in repairing the scheme’s greenhouse – a transformation sparked by the shared project. Now, many more residents are rediscovering the joy of gardening and finding new reasons to head outdoors.

Susie, a resident with Housing 21 said: “I wouldn’t have thought to grow lettuce and other vegetables. I normally only plant flowers. This has been a lovely experience, and we can share what we grow with others”
A resident from Percy Court added: “It’s encouraged a broader community appeal that includes family, friends, carers and residents”.
As demand for outdoor-focused wellbeing initiatives continues to grow, How Does Your Garden Grow stands out as a testament to the positive impact small interventions can have – not just on gardens, but on lives.
