As the colder months approach, now is a good time to think about how you can prepare for winter and make sure you have the support you need. Whether you're concerned about heating costs, keeping healthy, or simply staying connected with others, there are practical steps and sources of support available to help.

Help with heating and household costs

If you are finding it difficult to manage your energy bills or household expenses, you may be eligible for financial support.

Financial support available this winter may include:

  • Helping Hands Fund for residents experiencing financial hardship or unexpected difficulties.
  • HACT energy vouchers, which may help eligible residents with gas and electricity costs.
  • Pension Credit, which can increase income for those on a low income and may provide access to additional benefits and discounts.
  • Warm Home Discount, offering a reduction on electricity bills for eligible households.
  • Winter Fuel Payment, helping eligible older people with the cost of heating their homes.
  • If you're unsure what support you may be entitled to, speak with your local manager, who can help signpost you to the right advice and assistance.

Make use of warm community spaces

If you're struggling to keep warm at home or would simply like some company, consider visiting a local Warm Hub.

Warm Hubs are free community venues where you can enjoy a heated, welcoming environment, meet others, access refreshments and, in some locations, receive advice about finances, wellbeing and local support services.

Winter can feel isolating for some people, so staying connected with others can make a real difference to both physical and mental wellbeing.

Register for additional energy support

Many residents may benefit from joining their energy supplier's Priority Services Register (PSR).

This free service provides extra support for people who may need assistance because of their age, health condition or personal circumstances. Depending on your needs, support may include:

  • Advance warning of planned power cuts
  • Extra support during energy emergencies
  • Accessible bills and communications
  • Assistance with meter readings and energy services
  • Contact your energy supplier directly to find out whether you are eligible.

Looking after your health

Cold weather can affect our health, particularly as we get older or if we live with an existing health condition.

To help stay well this winter:

  • Keep your home comfortably warm
  • Wear several layers of clothing
  • Use blankets when sitting for long periods
  • Enjoy regular hot meals and warm drinks
  • Keep active where possible
  • Ensure radiators are not blocked by furniture or clothing
  • Check whether you are eligible for a free seasonal flu vaccination through the NHS.

Taking simple steps now can help prevent illness and keep you comfortable throughout the winter months.

Be prepared for severe weather

Winter weather can sometimes lead to travel disruption, power outages or difficulties accessing services. Planning ahead can help you feel more confident and prepared.

We recommend that residents:

  • Keep a small supply of non-perishable food and bottled water at home
  • Order repeat prescriptions in good time and avoid running low on essential medication
  • Keep mobile phones charged
  • Have a torch and spare batteries available
  • Save important contact numbers somewhere easy to find
  • Check in regularly with neighbours, friends and family, especially during periods of severe weather

A little preparation can go a long way in helping you stay safe and comfortable if conditions change unexpectedly.

Looking out for one another

Winter preparedness is about more than keeping warm. It's about supporting each other and building strong, connected communities.

A friendly conversation, a welfare check on a neighbour, or asking for help when you need it can make a significant difference. Together, we can help ensure everyone feels supported, included and safe throughout the winter season.

If you are worried about keeping warm, managing household costs, accessing food, collecting prescriptions or obtaining other essential items, please speak to your local manager to discuss the support that may be available.

Remember: you are not alone.

Help is available, and there are people who can support you throughout the winter months.
