A talented resident at a Retirement Living scheme in Sunderland has put his carpentry skills to use by creating a wonderful bespoke bookcase for a local school.

Dave, a resident at Housing 21’s scheme is now retired and always keen to get involved in new projects as a former skilled carpenter.

Speaking about the project, he said: “I was keen to embark on a new project and approached the nearby school to see how I could help. The school shared their vision for a tree-shaped bookcase, and I set to work bringing the idea to life.”

The result is a stunning handcrafted piece that captured the hearts of everyone who has seen it. The unique bookcase features intricate details, including miniature wooden animals nestled among the shelves, adding an extra touch of magic that the children absolutely adored.

Residents and colleagues from the scheme visited the school to present the completed bookcase, where they received an overwhelmingly positive response from pupils and staff.

The success of the project has already inspired future collaborations, with plans now underway for Dave to work with the school on creating a full feature wall to further enhance the children's learning environment.

Alison Minniss, Local Housing Manager at Housing 21 said: "We are incredibly proud of Dave and the kindness and skill he has shown through this project. It perfectly demonstrates the positive difference our residents continue to make in the local community every day."
