Extra Care development in South Wootton is officially named as part of a naming competition. The winning suggestion was Saltern View which recognises the village's historic connection to medieval salt making with evidence of 11 to 14 century salt production and surviving saltern mounds found in the local area.
The name was chosen by Leyton (pictured) who is the son of an employee at Housing 21’s Extra Care scheme in Fakenham.
Once completed, Housing 21’s Extra Care scheme will comprise 77 self-contained apartments which will all feature their own balconies or patios. The apartments will be available for social rent to local people over the age of 55.
Tracy Jones, Head of Commissioning and Service Integration at Housing 21 said “It was fantastic to bring together residents from Meadow Walk and the local community to help choose the name for our newest Extra Care scheme in South Wootton.
“We'd like to congratulate Leyton, whose winning suggestion, Saltern View, was inspired by the area's rich heritage of medieval salterns, where salt was produced from seawater along the edge of The Wash centuries ago. Saltern View will be a fantastic addition to Housing 21's Extra Care portfolio, providing high-quality homes that support independent living when it opens in 2028”
Housing21 was joined for the celebration by Norfolk County Council’s Cabinet Member for Adult Social Care and Public Health, Councillor Scott Hussey. Norfolk County Council has provided £3.1m to deliver the scheme as part of its Independent Living programme, alongside funding from Homes England.
Councillor Hussey said: “Saltern View is the latest in a series of quality developments that Norfolk County Council is investing in to support people to live independently in their own homes for as long as possible.
“Schemes like these improve quality of life for residents by giving them a sense of community, social connection, and essential services on their doorstep. They also play a crucial role in keeping people out of care homes.”
Residents will have the assurance of an on-site care team who will be available 24/7, allowing them to live independently but with care and support on hand if they need it.
Residents will benefit from a range of facilities including a restaurant, residents’ lounge, hair salon, laundry room, guest room, assisted bathroom, and mobility scooter store. There will also be landscaped gardens and on-site parking.
