November 2026: Extra Care Resident Newsletter

The Extra Care Resident Newsletter keeps you informed with the latest news, updates, and opportunities from Housing 21. It’s designed to keep you connected, highlight ways to get involved, and share helpful tips to support you in your home and community.

Why not listen to the audio version of our latest newsletter:

Remembrance Day holds a special place in Housing 21’s history. Housing 21 was founded in 1964 to provide homes for older and disabled ex-servicemen and widows, and our roots remain closely connected to supporting the Armed Forces community.

Residents across Housing 21 mark the occasion in many different ways. However you choose to remember, it is an opportunity to recognise the sacrifices made by previous generations and reflect on all those whose lives have been affected by war.

Housing 21 is proud to support the Armed Forces community through our commitment to the Armed Forces Covenant.

Lest We Forget.

Is your scheme holding a Remembrance Day event? We would love to see your photographs and hear your stories. Email communications@housing21.org.uk.

As the colder months approach, now is a good time to think about how you can prepare for winter and make sure you have the support you need. Whether you're concerned about heating costs, keeping healthy, or simply staying connected with others, there are practical steps and sources of support available to help.

Help with Heating and Household Costs

If you are finding it difficult to manage your energy bills or household expenses, you may be eligible for financial support.

Support available this winter may include:

  • Helping Hands Fund for residents experiencing financial hardship or unexpected difficulties.
  • HACT energy vouchers, which may help eligible residents with gas and electricity costs.
  • Pension Credit, which can increase income for those on a low income and may provide access to additional benefits and discounts.
  • Warm Home Discount, offering a reduction on electricity bills for eligible households.
  • Winter Fuel Payment, helping eligible older people with the cost of heating their homes.

From November 2026, Phase Two of Awaab’s Law strengthens how housing providers respond to problems that could affect residents’ health and safety. This includes damp and mould, excess cold or heat, fire, electrical and structural hazards, and other serious hazards in the home.

If you notice damp or mould, a leak, unsafe electrics, problems with your heating, structural concerns or anything else that could affect your health or safety, please tell us as soon as possible. Reporting problems early helps us investigate and take action where needed.

Speak to your local manager, call 0370 192 4000 or email enquiries@housing21.org.uk.

Most people feel lonely at some point in their lives. It can happen for many reasons, such as changes in health, losing a loved one, moving home, or simply not seeing people as often as we'd like. While loneliness is common, it can have an impact on our wellbeing if it continues for a long time.

The good news is that small connections can make a big difference.

Whether it's chatting to a neighbour, joining a coffee morning, attending an activity, or spending time in a shared lounge or garden, taking a small step can help you feel more connected and part of your community.

Small moments matter

  • Saying hello to someone in the corridor

  • Sharing a coffee with a neighbour

  • Joining an activity for the first time

  • Attending a residents' meeting or event

  • Making a new friend

These everyday moments can help build confidence, reduce feelings of loneliness and create a stronger sense of community.

Support is available

If you're feeling lonely, you're not alone. Your local onsite team can help you find activities, connect with other residents and discover opportunities to get involved in scheme life.

You may also find support from:

  • Age UK's friendship services and telephone support

  • The Silver Line, a free confidential helpline for older people

  • Befriending services offered by local charities and community groups

  • Local libraries, community centres and faith groups, which often run social activities and events

Open the Door to Connection

A conversation, a smile or an invitation can mean more than you realise. Together, we can help create welcoming, supportive communities where everyone feels connected, valued and at home.

If you're worried about yourself or another resident, please speak to your onsite team. They can help you find the right support and opportunities to connect with others.

We have been asking residents what matters most to them and how they would like to have their say.

More than 400 comments and answers highlighted the importance of clear communication, better follow-up and showing residents what has happened as a result of their feedback. Residents also spoke about improvements to homes and shared areas, access to local managers and having different ways to get involved.

Face-to-face conversations remain important, but residents would also like choices including paper surveys, newsletters, noticeboards, email, text and telephone. The responses will help shape future resident engagement activities and how we work with residents.

If you are interested in joining one of our resident forums, email engagement@housing21.org.uk or speak to your local manager. You do not need any previous experience, and support is available to help you take part.

There’s still time to complete our Tenant Satisfaction Measures (TSM) survey and tell us about your experience of living with Housing 21. Your feedback helps us understand what we're doing well and where we can improve.

The survey closes on 7 November 2026, so if you’ve been invited to take part and haven’t yet responded, please make sure your voice is heard.

Once the survey has closed, our independent research partner, Acuity, will analyse the results and prepare reports over the coming months. We’ll use what residents tell us to help shape future improvements and services.

Local scheme reports will be published on our website in Spring 2027, so you can see the results for your scheme and learn more about the feedback we've received.

Thank you to everyone who has taken part so far. Your feedback makes a difference.

“When the dog bites, when the bee stings…” we start thinking about our favourite things!

Last month, we invited residents to tell us about their favourite things, from meals and hobbies to the things they enjoy most about autumn.

Thank you to everyone who has taken part so far. One of the most popular answers we've received is a true classic: roast dinners!

If you haven't entered yet, there's still time. Complete our short survey and you'll be entered into a prize draw to win a Luxury Afternoon Tea Hamper.

We'd love to hear about:

  • Your favourite meal
  • Your favourite hobby or pastime
  • What you enjoy most about autumn
  • And some of your other favourite things!

Your responses help us learn more about the people who make the Housing 21 community so special.

Closing date: Monday 30 November 2026
