Green space has been transformed into a flourishing community orchard at Housing 21’s scheme, Lavender Meadows in Stratford-Upon-Avon.

The collaborative initiative from residents and employees at the Extra Care scheme is focused on conservation, sustainability, and community engagement.

The project began with a simple idea to use the land surrounding the building for more than just a well-kept lawn. A conversation between residents sparked interest in reimagining the space as something that could benefit both people and local wildlife.

Clair Moorman, a resident of Lavender Meadows, praised the project and those involved: “I’d like to thank everyone who has helped today. They did a fabulous job and were such a lovely team.

“We’re all really looking forward to seeing all of the blossom, sampling the fruit and seeing the buddleia and wildflowers bloom.”

Through existing connections with CAVA, a local voluntary organisation, residents were introduced to Forest of Hearts and its Green Therapy programme where they proposed their idea of the community orchard, and it was warmly received.

Residents worked together gathering ideas and building support, which ultimately led to the formation of a dedicated working group within Lavender Meadows.

With funding from Forest of Hearts, along with personal donations from residents in memory of loved ones, the orchard began to take root. Wildflower seeds have been planted along the bank, and the community has embraced the No Mow May initiative to promote biodiversity and support pollinators.

Plans are underway to make the orchard fully accessible with an all-weather path. When the trees begin to bear fruit, the community hopes to host seasonal harvest events.

Lavender Meadows is a vibrant Extra Care scheme situated in Bishopton, Stratford-upon-Avon. The scheme allows residents over the age of 55 to live independently in their own apartments with access to on-site care.

The scheme has been carefully designed to provide fully accessible facilities for both residents and visitors. These include a café/bistro and hair salon that are available for use by the local community.
